Therefore, she joined the University of Chicago and graduated in 1990 with A.B, majoring in Political Science. Koenig later joined Columbia University for her postgraduate degree in Russian history.

However, she could not able to proceed with her postgraduation, therefore, she left the school after being in the college for two good weeks for unknown reasons.

Koenig after graduating from the university, she started working as a journalist at The East Hampton Star. She also worked as a columnist for The New York Times and in Russia for ABC News. 

Koenig further covered political issues in the State House for the Concord Monitor and later for the Baltimore Sun.
